Summary
Dale Bunting got the rest of the scouts to redistribute gear from Jim Blanchard's canoe and continue paddling down the lake.
When Herman and Penny Luce saw Bob Rathburn they immediately suspected polio, having both worked on a polio ward. The result of a spinal tap confirmed it. They wanted to get him into an iron lung but the one at Camden General was in use with another patient waiting for it. Charles Fike did arrange to borrow some doses of gamma globulin from Camden General. They sent cables to other hospitals asking for an iron lung.
Heidi Toivo was concerned about her daughter Betsy and thought she needed to see a doctor but had no way to get her there so tried a sauna.
Garth Matson told Jim Blanchard some of his war experience to encourage him in handling the situation.
