Bob Rathburn was a thirteen year old scout from Clayburg on a canoeing trip on the Spearfish and Albany Rivers^FK1 when he came down with polio.

He was taken to Sanford Memorial Hospital in Spearfish Lake by Garth Matson and accompanied by the scoutmaster, Jim Blanchard.^FK5 Dr. Herman Luce diagnosed polio and decided Bob needed to be in an iron lung.^FK6

Phil Gravengood flew Bob, Jim Blanchard and Penny Luce to Madison where Bob could be put in an iron lung at University of Wisconsin Hospital. Once in Madison Jim Blanchard called Bob's parents and they were able to see him in a lucid period before he died in the early hours.^FK14
