Phil Gravengood was a Spearfish Lake resident, and the father of Mark Gravengood. He has worked for the small, independent Spearfish Lake Telephone Company for years.ROC11
He was a pilot; in 1955 he had a Stinson.FK2 He flew two mercy flights during the fight against polio in August 1955. The first was to take Bob Rathburn to Madison in Wisconsin where he could be put into an iron lung.FK8 The second was to Kansas City to buy gamma globulin to treat polio patients, returning at night he found the runway was lit by highway flare pots.FK15
Once he had been in contact with polio he stayed with Garth Matson to keep away from his children to reduce the risk of infecting them.FK10
He later flew Garth to Clayburg so they could attend the funeral of Bob Rathburn.FK20
