Summary
Garth had breakfast with his family before dressing and driving to the bank in Spearfish Lake.
The scouts got up early to be on the big lake in the early calm. As they paddled close to the north shore Bob Rathburn weakened until he could no longer hold his paddle. They pulled in to a beach about quarter of a mile from the state road where Dale took two scouts to flag down Garth Matson as he drove passed. Garth loaded Bob and Jim to take them to the hospital while Dale was left to bring the group to the beach in Spearfish Lake.
Herman and Penny Luce had started sorting out their new office before Dr. Brege took them over to the hospital to show them round and introduce them. They told him they had rented half a duplex on Oak Street. They expected to start seeing patients next Monday.
While they were there Denise, the head nurse, told them Garth had arrived with a sick child in his car.
