Dale Bunting was a nineteen year old assistant scoutmaster from Clayburg on a canoe trip to the Spearfish and Albany Rivers in August 1955.
When one of the scouts, Bob Rathburn, became ill and the scoutmaster, Jim Blanchard, took him to hospital, Dale had to get the rest of the group along the Spearfish Lake to the town. He accepted Garth Matson's offer to camp in his front yard until Jim Blanchard returned.
