Jim Blanchard was a Scoutmaster from Clayburg. In August 1955 he was leading a group of 10 Scouts and an assistant leader, Dale Bunting, on a canoe trip on the Spearfish and Albany Rivers.^FK2

When one of the scouts, Bob Rathburn, became ill Jim accompanied him to the Spearfish Lake Hospital where Dr. Luce diagnosed polio.^FK6 He accompanied Bob to University of Wisconsin Hospital in Madison when he needed an iron lung^FK7

He had to tell the other scouts that Bob had died and the trip was over.^FK15

He was grateful that Garth Matson and Phil Gravengood flew to Clayburg for Bob Rathburn's funeral.^FK20
