Dr. Herman Luce is first mentioned in the last chapter of Square One, is a major character in the first twelve chapters of Hiding Patty (before his retirement to Florida), and both he and his wife are major characters in Forgotten Killer.

He becomes one of the two doctors in Spearfish Lake, from arriving in August of 1955FK1 until his retirement in 2009. His wife Penny, was described as "a small woman with curly blonde hair". She had passed away years before his retirement.HP8

His arrival in Spearfish Lake coincided with an outbreak of polio, which he and Penny were suited to deal with, having previously worked on a polio ward in St. Louis.FK6

In the book Hiding Patty Dr. Luce made do without a nurse in his practice, only having help from Betty Warren, a "bookkeeper or business assistant or whatever she was." HP4

He was described as "...(he) was over eighty and walked slowly and stiffly with a cane, he was still a gentleman."HP1 "He seemed like a nice enough guy, if a little crotchety, which was understandable due to his age."HP4
