They were being shown round the Sanford Memorial Hospital when Bob Rathburn was brought in. They both recognised the symptoms of polio because of their previous experience.^FK6

When some volunteers came to the hospital to assist with the polio patients, Penny taught them the physical therapy developed by Sister Elizabeth Kenny in Australia to reduce the long-term effects of polio.^FK18
