In August 1955 she tried sauna when four year old Betsy had a headache and was lethargic.FK6 When she and Heikki took Betsy to the hospital they learned that she had polio - the first local child to be diagnosed in an epidemic that summer.FK10 When Betsy returned home from horpital Heidi put her in the sauna a number of times each day to help her rehabilitation, and she had no long term effects from the paralysis.FK21
Heidi's health wasn't very good by 1988. To find out what happened to her son before she died was part of the story in finding support. She saw the Toivo Expedition off in December 1990, but she was more frail than ever. Still, she managed to see her son's body returned and formally buried in the township cemetery, with full honors by the Army’s Third Infantry Regiment.AF52
