Summary
Randy gets home late so goes straight to bed. In the morning his mother comments on the surfboard. He talks about what he did on spring break, and shows them photographs, telling his mother about Crystal and her mother being Karin Johansen. Randy catches up on the family news.
After breakfast Randy goes out with his father to talk about what to do over the summer. Ryan tells Randy about the history of the two Clark companies, and that there is a problem over who will control them in the future. Putting Randy into the construction company could solve some of the problems. The management of the construction company still relies on Randy's grandfather Brent, whereas the management of the plywood plant could be handed over to Steve Augsberg with little detrimental effect, so Ryan would like to train Randy to take over from Brent, but that means getting experience at the ground floor. The family have been keeping control of the companies within Spearfish Lake for many years, however if sold to a large outside company the relatively small and isolated facilities would be prime candidates for closure in a recession. Such closure would be disastrous for the economy of the town.
