Summary

Eve tells the assembled group from the reunion how she finally settled on the name 'Eve' and that the day she did she considered her naming day to be as significant to her as her birthday.

Emily asked her when she made up her mind to have the surgery, and she said that while it took more than 26 months to get to the surgery, but by that time she had made the decision little by little, having started her RLT a few hours after graduation. She mentioned that she had two different personas, two different personalities, literally two different identities, and that her biggest worry was that there would be a slipup and Eve's existence would become known in Bradford.

Looking back to 1987:

Eve and Arlene had started regular trips to Chicago right after the trip to "Dress to Desire" every few weeks until the end of school for appointments with the endocrinologist, counselors, and electrolysis. Once summer started, Shae or occasionally Arlene drove her twice a week for electrolysis and the like. Usually when Shae drove they spent additional time away from Bradford, perhaps at a mall or hanging out on a Lake Michigan beach, where Eve could have more time before having to revert to Denis when they got near Bradford.

Shae was driving on August fifth, and warned Eve that basketball practice was about to start. This meant that they would have to leave Bradford for Chicago at five in the morning so she could get back in time for practice. Eve told Shae that she had decided to use that name, mostly because it maintained her family ties.

They decide to see if there was a fair or festival that they can stop at after the appointment. Eve mentions that she's looking forward to the next year when she doesn't have to worry about what anyone in Bradford would think.
