Summary
Eve usually took a full dose of Darvocet well before her electrolysis (hair removal) session, since it was quite painful and giving the drug a head start helped with that. Shae was groggy from their early start and instead of chatting with Phyllis, she fell asleep in the waiting room, and Phyllis had to wake her up when Eve was done.
They had decided to go to a county fair in Blanchardville (south of South Bend). This was far enough away from Bradford to be safe and a long enough drive for Eve to be able to sleep off the effects of the Darvocet.
They saw a "Ring the Bell" game where the player uses a large mallet to drive a weight up a pole to ring the bell. A boy was trying to show off for his girlfriend but not having any luck. A couple of smaller guys on the side snickered, and the guy said, "Go ahead and laugh, you pussies".
Shae yelled back, "Who you calling pussy, shrimp?". The guy challenged her to do better, and, overconfident, even paid for her three tries.
On her first try, she came within inches of the bell, better than any of the boys had done, but rang it on her other two hits. The larger of the smaller guys who had snickered told her that it was impressive, and that it was good to see someone put those bastards in their place for once. Shae guessed correctly that they were the school bullies, and John and Paul, the guys, said that they owed her for giving them a good story to tell around school.
The four spent several hours at the fair, getting to know them a little. They were both seniors, almost exactly a year apart in age. When they rode the Ferris Wheel, Paul and Eve snuggled close together. Eventually it was time for them to go; John said that they hoped to see them again, and Eve said that they couldn't plan on it; her folks didn't like her going out with boys, and that they had snuck out that day. John and Paul kissed both Shae and Eve goodbye.
In the car, Eve told Shae that Paul reminded her of Denis, and that she really enjoyed kissing John.
November
The fall basketball season had just ended, and Bradford won the state finals. Now Shae had just a few minutes to drive Denis home and get to volleyball practice, without even having enough time to get home to check her mail. By then they had agreed that they were going to try to go to college together as roommates. They agreed to try to get to the Mall in South Bend on Saturday, since Shae wouldn't have a volleyball commitment.
