Spearfish Lake Airport
Spearfish Lake Airport is a strip of grass and a couple of "T" Hangers, suitable for light aircraft, along with a somewhat larger hanger with attached office, built by the WPA in the 1930s. It is the main setting for the first section of Rocinante.
In August 1955 Phil Gravengood flew two mercy flights when polio came to Spearfish Lake. The first was to take Bob Rathburn to Madison in Wisconsin where he could be put into an iron lung.FK8 The second was to Kansas City to buy gamma globulin to treat polio patients, returning at night he found the runway was lit by highway flare pots.FK15
By December 1999 the lone runway is paved and both long enough and strong enough for Jennlynn's Learjet.RR30
The airport is mentioned in Chapter 40 of Facing the Storm , as how Blake Walworth and Jennifer Evachevski escaped for their honeymoon in a chartered Cessna Citation after the recording session / marriage at the Pike Bar (Summer 2000).
