Shirley Hoffman is first introduced as the the de facto floor manager of Bettye's Ranch, a legal brothel in the fictional Shelby County, Nevada. In 1992 she attempts to buy the ranch with George Bush. However this fails and she goes on to part own (with George) and manage the Redlite Ranch in Antelope Valley, Nevada instead. (In Hearts of Gold Chapter 8 it is revelaed that she owns a third of the Redlite Ranch and that her share will eventually pass to her grandson Will Hoffman.)
Personal History
She was born in 1929 and stood her first lineup at Maybelle's in Ely in 1943.RR44 She is a widow with a living son and daughter, grandchildren and expectations of great-grandchildren soon.
Shirley grew up on her father's small cattle ranch, the Bar H Bar, about fifty miles from Ely, Nevada. She started work at a brothel in Ely while in High School and stayed in the prostitution business ever since, although by 1990 she only sees clients by special request.
Shirley only worked weekends during high school and met Carl Hoffman just prior to graduation. He was recently discharged from the Army and they were engaged right away. By 1947 they had inherited her father's ranch and she was pregnant with their first child, Duane Hoffman. After three children, times were hard enough that in 1952 that she returned to part-time work, although at a variety of houses.
Shirley's husband Carl died in 1970 and her youngest son, Dave, was killed in Vietnam about the same time. That is when she switched from full-time rancher's wife and part-time prostitute towards more full-time work.
Her daughter, Dorothy, is married to Chuck, a slot machine mechanic in Las Vegas with a daughter, Angela and a son, Mike. Shirley's oldest son, Duane, is married to Ellen and they have two kids, Sara, just completing college in 1990 and with plans to marry soon. Their other child, Will, was rescued by Jennlynn after a snakebite when she flew him in Magic Carpet (aircraft) to Ely.
Shirley hired Jennlynn Swift at Bettye's Ranch around June 1990.
Description
Shirley is described as a thin, wizened old woman with a deeply lined face and gray hair, looking about sixty but in fact she's over seventy. She's also a superb prostitute, and been described as "the best there's ever been [...] and knows how to teach it, too."MC2
