Duane Hoffman is the oldest son of Carl and Shirley Hoffman and was raised on the Bar H Bar ranch in Nevada. His younger brother Dave was killed in Vietnam around this time, too.
Duane met Ellen at a cathouse in Elko sometime before 1970, so prostitution was not yet legal. When his father died in 1970, Duane decided he wanted to try being a rancher. He had recently married Ellen, and Shirley passed the ranch to them although Ellen would need to work on occasion to keep the ranch going.MC02
Duane and Ellen have two children, Sara, the older, and Will. Duane led the prayer at Thanksgiving, 1990, praising the Lord for leading Jennlynn Swift to rescue his son.MC05
Jennlynn described Duane and his family as "three generations of awesomely friendly, competent and down-home people. They didn't have a lot of money and were pretty close to the edge, but by God they were independent and proud of it!"MC10
During 2004 it looked as though Will and Jennlynn might move to the Bar H Bar in spring 2005. Duane identified a site about a mile from the ranch house where they could build a house and put in an airstrip.HOG12 He was, however, relieved when they told him in early December 2004 that they wouldn't be moving up there yet, because the ranch couldn't support two families and Duane and Ellen were not ready to retire.HOG23
