Summary
Vicky and Jason meet Duane near the half way point of his hike. Duane takes advantage of the opportunity for a real shower in their hotel room and a chance to restock at a grocery store. Duane volunteers to sleep on the floor to avoid awkward issues of sleeping arrangements.
Everybody has a chance for a short hike on the trail and Vicky lets the MacRae boys hike the trail across West Virginia, all 4 miles of it! Parting is again rough for Jason. His wish to join the adventure clashes with his knowledge that he's letting his son grow up.
The remaining couple visit the Antietam battlefield before heading back towards Bradford. Jason gets philosophical over the loss of young life in represents as many of the soldiers would have been Duane's age. "I'm just goddamn glad Duane's big adventure is a walk down a trail, not a year walking around with a rifle in some goddamn hellhole like Vietnam."
Vicky is quiet on the drive back, but her thoughts are troubled. Vicky isn't ready to give up her dream of children of her own, but can or should Jason be a father again at his age? Would he want to or would it be fair to the kid? And yet, if the answer isn't one she likes, can she give up her dream?
