Summary
The Monday morning flight from Camden to Minneapolis–St. Paul and from there to San Jose had gone well, as had the Monday afternoon meeting in Scott Brayton's office followed by a neighborhood reconnaissance. Tuesday morning finds Randy parked up the street from Rachel and Joel’s house, with the rest of the family and some of Brayton's men close by.
After Joel left for work Randy, his parents and Ruth arrived at Rachel's house. They rang the doorbell, and Rachel was totally surprised to see the four of them. Over the next few minutes Ryan tells Rachel that they know a little of what is going on, and probably more than she knows what is going on - for example that Joel is cheating on her... with more than one woman, and that they have lots of photos to prove it.
It took less discussion that they expected - very soon Rachel said Yes, that she wanted to be out of San Jose and back in Spearfish Lake. Within two hours everything she wanted to take with her was packed and in the large rental truck, then they picked Jared up from school. Everyone then met at a pre-selected restaurant.
Over a late lunch they decided that Linda and Ruth would swap the too-large truck for a minivan and transfer the boxes over to it, then they would drive the minivan back to Spearfish Lake. Meanwhile Ryan, Randy, Rachel and Jared would fly back. One of Scott Brayton's people would keep an eye on Joel and give them a heads-up if he headed to the airport. The rest of the discussion hammered out some short-term and medium-term logistics, including that Rachel and Jared would live with Randy and Nicole for a while, and that Rachel would help Nicole with little Brent.
The chapter ends with Randy saying Don’t worry, Rachel. We’ll carry you if we have to. That’s what family is for.
