Summary
Long after everyone else is asleep, Noah, while not doubting his faith, continues to ponder his future and whether he even wants a church of his own, or a different path for his life. Finally he falls asleep.
In the morning, he is awakened by the roar of the propane burners, and quickly repacks his drybags. After breakfast, the many hands quickly have the kitchen packed up and the rafts loaded. Al switches some of the passengers around so that he can ride with Noah to see how he does handling a boat.
After more than an hour, they came to some rapids; Noah followed the line that the preceding boats had used, and Al tells him that he did well, and talks to him about the possibility of getting him qualified as a boatman that he could call on in an emergency. Al tells him "Preach, if we could run you down this river for a summer, I think you could probably be as good as anyone on this river."
They pull in to a beach at the mouth of the Little Colorado for swimming and lunch.
Jon and Tanisha disappear until lunch is almost finished, to the amusement of Crystal and Karin.
After Scooter recites a short passage from Major Powell's journal, they resume their journey.
