Summary
It's the Saturday of the 3-day Memorial Day weekend. Susie and Jake continue to work the fuel dock. Susie suggests that if Lisa shows up that she and Jake put on a act as if they are boyfriend-girlfriend, all lovey-dovey and kissy-face. Maybe that will send the message that it’s a hopeless cause - just to get across to Lisa that Brittany is history. Jake agreed, and Susie was able to dash up to the snack bar and tip off Barb, Debby, and Annette on their plans.
Lisa did show up later, she had to have found the nearest phone to call home, probably to report on (Jake) and to quiz Brittany about what (Jake) said. Later on Jake and Susie see that Lisa and some male had seated themselves at a shaded table near the snack bar to wait until Jake was free.
During their dinner break Jake and Susie join Lisa and her friend at their table. Lisa introduced the man as Brian, her boyfriend. Susie suspects that it's a weekend "friends-with-benefits" arrangement and the ensuing conversation confirms it. While they wait for their dinner Susie continues with the boyfriend-girlfriend act. Lisa still tries her best to get Jake to reconsider Brittany. After Brian and Lisa leave Jake and Susie finish their dinner and go back to the fuel dock. Once Lisa is out of earshot Jake thanks Susie for the idea of the act, and for pulling it off. Jake, Susie and Barb work the fuel dock until they run out of customers late at night. They close down, then Jake and Susie head back to his room, and relax.
Jake and Susie discuss Lisa, Brittany, and the interaction: how she had represented a permanence, a stability, a future, the house full of kids, and more... in short, a long term committed relationship, and all of it was thrown away by her cheating. They also discuss that Annette is going in one direction, Susie is going in another, Barb in a third, Debbie in a fourth, and Jake in yet a different direction.
They shower, and go to bed. Both are too exhausted to do any more than cuddle and sleep.
The next morning the alarm clock woke them up way too early. As they head for the bathroom Susie looked out the window and saw the boat with Lisa aboard working it's way up the channel. They both stepped out on the balcony and waved at her - and both were stark naked.
