Summary

The rest of the Memorial Day weekend was almost as busy. Susie and Jake both knew they’d have liked to have heard the conversation on that boat as it went on down the channel to the big lake. Jake also wondered just how much of the whole Lisa's visit incident was going to get back to his family and to Brittany.

The Tuesday after the weekend had Barb bringing Darryl, a boy about Rachel’s age down to the fuel dock and asking Jake to show him the ropes - to be an alternate dock hand on future busy weekends or when he's out with Nate. Within a week Darryl had proven to be a know-it-all, irresponsible teenage jerk with more mouth than common sense, and was gone. It turned out that Barb knew his mother and had been asked to give him a tryout. Barb commented that she would inform the mother as to why he was fired.

The Saturday of the weekend after Memorial Day was busy, but not quite as bad. Susie had an idea as to another dock hand, told her mom, and a an hour or so later Wayne Shamplo was being shown how to run a fuel dock. Like Susie, he was home from college, A few days later Jake went out with Nate and Susie backed Wayne up at the dock. After that Jake was out with Nate once or twice a week.

The summer continued onward. June passed quickly, and all of a sudden, it was the Fourth of July weekend, which was the busiest weekend of the year. The snack bar was packed from dawn to dusk, and there was a continuous stream of boats fueling. The motel was filled all weekend, which meant there was that much more cleaning to do. It was a relief to have that weekend over with, though it meant that the peak of the summer was past, and now on the downhill side of the season.
