Summary
Jake will be driving downstate to pick up the Parabellum sailboat kit, and is considering visiting his parents. Nate offered to go along, but Jake declined with thanks as he might be staying two or three days. The next day Jake pointed his Pontiac south and six or so hours later he pulled into his parents driveway.
Naturally there was a bring-them-up-to-date conversation that covered boat deliveries, working as a deckhand on a charter fishing boat and running a fuel dock for a marina. His sister Julie mentioned that Lisa had seen him once, and had seen his new girlfriend Susie. She also brought up Brittany, to which Jake said that "Brittany is part of my past - There’s nothing there anymore". At one point his mother asked if he'd planned on staying for supper? Jake answered that he could, assuming that there’s enough for him, and that he'd like to stay the night. He'd have to get going in the morning as he was actually down here to pick up a boat and take it back north.
His mother announced supper in 15 minutes, Jake went upstairs to sort what of his clothing he wanted to take with him. His dad followed him to have a private conversation, starting with an apology about the night Jake left. They discussed Lisa's attitude and Jake commented She doesn’t seem to be much of one to accept reality, and according to her, things should be the way she thinks they should be, no matter what everybody else thinks. His father agreed. Jake's father let's him know he's always welcome, and doesn't blame him for timing his visits to avoid Lisa. At that point Mom called them to supper.
During dinner Jake fleshed out some of the stories he'd told earlier. After dinner he finished sorting his clothing, took everything down to the car, and told his mom she could get rid of everything he left behind except his Navy uniforms.
Bed was early as Jake's mom and dad both had to be at work early, and Julie had to be in school pretty early. Jake told them he might sleep in a little. His ulterior motive was to dodge any morning conversations.
At least he knew that he could come home again - but he would have to avoid Lisa.
When he woke up in the morning the house was quiet. He took one last pass around his old room, picked up an armload of books, walked downstairs, locked up and hit the road.
