Steve Stoneslinger is the Spearfish County Sheriff at the time Cody Archer shot and killed Jack Lufkin and his son. The County Sheriff will often support the City Police, such as when Steve backstopped Sergeant Charlie Wexler when called to the scene at the Lufkin House. Steve was the one that smelled the chemicals and found the methamphetamine production lab in the basement.^SK1

A few days later, it was Steve and the Sheriff's department that responded to a Breaking and Entering at the Archer home, thus arresting City Police Chief Bill Abernathy and two members of the Regional Drug Task Force attempting an illegal warrantless search (essentially a fishing expedition) and to plant false evidence.^SK15 He was also present when a representative of Family and Children's Services attempted to take custody of Janice and pointed out she was no longer a minor.^SK16

Sheriff Stoneslinger actively supported Charlie Wexler in his efforts to arrest Frenchy LeDroit and his conspirators, including planning to send patrol cars into the woods to find them, when they walked out of the woods and right into the Spearfish Lake Cafe where the police had gathered.^BITH43

With Police Chief Charlie Wexler he planned a raid on the football team's pre-practice party,^BOF18 successfully arresting forty three minors in possession of alcohol, some of whom faced some additional charges.^BOF26

The following year Mark Gravengood located the illegal party from the air and the Sheriff was able to arrest all fourteen drunk kids.^RFW25
