Bill Abernathy was the Spearfish Lake police chief in December 2007. He had been appointed on the recommendation of a city manager who was trying to build staff loyal to himself. He’d been assistant chief of some small town department in the ritzier Chicago suburbs, and he came well recommended. He didn't understand that a small rural town was different from a small urban suburb.^SK2

At the time Cody Archer shot Jack and Bobby Lufkin Bill Abernathy was away for a few days vacation.

When he returned he was angry about the way Charlie Wexler had handled the shooting. He was open to the suggestion by Mike Livingston and Mike LaFayette from the Regional Drug Task Force that they plant drugs in the Archer house in order to get a search warrant.^SK14

After breaking in to the Archer house, the three were arrrested by county Sheriff Steve Stoneslinger and his deputies.^SK15 He was put on unpaid suspension until the charges were resolved and the council voted to teminate his contract inmmediately the suspension was resolved.^SK17 He ended up doing time for the breaking and entering.^SK38
