January 9 5:47 PM to 8:17 PM.
Plow Extra Two works slowly towards Spearfish Lake, often dropping the passengers to hit drifts with all three engines. Sometimes the passengers get out to shovel. The 1478 gets sicker and finally dies, in need of a 567-series injector pump.
As they near Albany River, they find themselves in radio range of the C&SL Railroad office. The train crew is happy to find they're still needed and the work hasn't been in vain. They drop the dead engine at the Albany River siding and the last segment is surprisingly easy.
The oxygen tanks Plow Extra Two has brought are quickly offloaded and rushed to the hospital where they are most needed. "All the effort that had gone into Plow Extra Two had been worthwhile, just with that part of its load."
Energized at finally arriving, talk turns to running to Warsaw. A phone call reassures them that Bud hasn't left yet, so they send word to hold tight, not knowing the train seen in Warsaw is the rest train, not Bud's. When the message gets to Walt, he realizes the error and calls out the emergency warning, hoping to intercept the two trains before colliding!
