Fred Rumsey is a Jerusalem Paper Mill employee and also a volunteer firefighter. He is involved in fighting the Warsaw fire, but spends more time worrying about his wife Marie, who is pregnant.
Eventually he gets news that she gave birth on the train en route to Spearfish Lake, as described in Chapter 7 of the book Snowplow Extra.
Their son Steve is nicknamed Stormy.
In August 2010 he was captain of the Warsaw fire department involved in fighting the Birdwatcher Hill FireBHF14.
