Steve Rumsey, nicked named "Stormy" because he was born on the railroad during a blizzard as his mother Marie Rumsey was escaping the Great Warsaw fire of 1981, as described in Chapter 7 of the book Snowplow Extra. His father Fred Rumsey is a Jerusalem Paper Mill employee and also a volunteer firefighter.
In chapter 23 of Facing the Storm he approaches Josh Archer for a job at the C&SL Railroad. Since he wants to race snowmachines during the winter, the railroad's operation schedule is perfect for him. Josh hires him as a brakeman.
