Bill Lee is the father of a daughter, Diane and founder of the Lordston Northern Scenic Railroad and its Baldwin 9608 Steam Locomotive. He was originally a factory worker before a mid-life change in career. With their similar interests and careers, it is unsurprising that Bill is good friends with Bud Ellsberg
Bill's wife died sometime before 1971. Car trouble on the summer 1971 vacation trip gave Bill and Diane the opportunity to discover a Baldwin steam engine in a small town in Tennessee. Over five years Bill worked to restore the steam engine with help from railfans and D&O Railroad volunteers, including Ralph McPhee and Harold Stevens. During the time of restoration, Bill found a scenic bit of little-used track north from Lordston to Whiteport and with a long-term land contract with D&O, Lordston Northern was born and surprisingly profitable.
Bill and Diane rebuilt an Alco S1 switcher with some help from Ken Sawyer. Diane did a lot of the dirty work and Bill let her paint it the color she wanted to, selected a rusty orange that just happened to match her hair.
