Summary
January 9th 4:07 PM to 8:18 PM.
Joe eats something and worries over his friend Rod. The fire has pushed into town, growing along Winter Street. As departments move to fight changes in the fire, they are losing hoses to ice and equipment needs to be towed through slush by bulldozers.
Joe is joined in the diner by railroaders. Talk covers what else has been lost and the state of the trains. The snowplow is ready for a return run, but otherwise they are staying still for a bit.
Frank Matson worries about how much the fire will hurt business and the bank. The thought is depressing enough that the group breaks up to either rest or return to work.
Retreating from the fire has the benefit of straightening out the defensive line. Fred confirms that the Kremmling department is protecting the Warsaw Oil Company and the Blair department is almost bored at the school. He repositions their pumpers to help. The fight on Plains street was already going bad when a propane tank blows up. Walt prepares the train as an ambulance run for the burn victims. Before they leave, Joe McGuinness is hurt by a falling wall and is added to the train. All of the Fire Departments retreat another block.
As he nears Spearfish Lake, Bud calls ahead on the VHF railroad radio to warn them and get the ambulances ready for when they arrive at the station.
