Mary Sue O’Leary first appears in Chapter 1 of the book Blanche Tickle Girl, where Matt Caldwell meets her at the Ambrose Marine fuel dock in St John's, Newfoundland, Canada where he tops off his diesel tank and purchases a few last-minute necessities. She jokes that the Mary Sue (Matt's sailboat) is named after her. We don't learn her full name until the end of Chapter 2.
She joins Matthew Caldwell on his cruise, the initial plans are Ireland, Scotland, and Norway.
Mary's parents had both died while she was young. Her father at sea and her mother soon after, when Mary was seven.BTG5 She was taken by her cousin Albert (named as Alfred twice but Albert the rest of the time) from Ballycotton Cove to his home in Blanche Tickle where he raised her until he died when she was just out of grade eleven. She got by since then picking up any job she could, not getting to sea as much as she'd like.BTG2
She turns up pregnant at the end of Chapter 23. They get married by a Judge in Beaufort, North Carolina in the middle of Chapter 25. By the end of the chapter Matt's leukemia is back, and this time it's going to kill him. He signs a will that leaves everything to Mary as he lies there in a hospital bed in Boston.
At his request, Mary, Jake and his doctor slip him out of the hospital and back to the Mary Sue while Adam takes Brittany out of the way.
A week later he passes away, at night, at sea, and in the cockpit of the Mary Sue while Mary sleeps. The next morning Mary buries him at sea (at the end of Chapter 26).
In Chapter 27, the final chapter, we discover that she gave birth to Matthew O’Leary Caldwell in the hospital in St. John’s. She is going to return and live in Blanche Tickle with her son.
