Summary
Matt Caldwell called in at the Ambrose Marine fuel dock in St. John’s, Newfoundland to top off his diesel before setting sail across the Atlantic to Ireland on the Mary Sue.
Working the fuel dock was Mary Sue O’Leary. She commented that he had named the boat for her and asked if he would take her with him when she learned his destination. Thinking it was just banter, Matt agreed to take her.
He had a few things to buy and to send a postcard to his parents before leaving. While stowing his purchases he was surprised by the thuds of two seabags landing on the deck and even more surprised to find that Mary was serious about joining him for the voyage. As she said, “Where I come from we never kid around about goin’ to sea.”
