John Ordway was the sophomore English teacher at the Spearfish Lake High School.

Mr. Ordway was not a popular teacher. What a jerk was considered a common item of gossip among the students.^BITH3 Another comment was At least as a senior you ought to be able to avoid Mr. Ordway. He’s a really creepy guy. He’s uh, well, I don’t want to say he’s gay, but he sure acts like he is. In the summer of 2010, Jack Erikson and Vixen Hvalchek discovered his body in a car while birding along the two-rut drive at the end of Point Drive. They called the Sheriff's department who processed the scene and interviewed the kids. He had died several days before being discovered.^BITH7 Spearfish Lake County Sheriff Steve Stoneslinger declared it "looks like a simple suicide. You think that way when the wrists have been slit and there’s a note."^BITH33 Police Chief Charlie Wexler asked the Sheriff to hold the report for a few days, allowing him to use the implication that he might have been murdered when interviewing Frenchy LeDroit, aiding in gaining an assault confession.^BITH44 He also used the unsaid contents of his suicide note when talking to the High School Principal Bryson Payne as pressure to get Payne to resign.^BITH45

Afterwards, Jack said, "I had him in class one year and I thought he was more than a little weird, like he wasn't all there, if you know what I mean." while Vixen responded, "Yeah, I did too. He was always humming this weird little tune, and he’d wander way off what he was saying at the drop of a hat. I mean, he’d be talking about English and somehow or other he’d start talking about what he’d had for dinner one night a month or so ago, and there was no clue as to how he got there. I’m not sure how I learned anything about English out of that class."^BITH7
