Indianapolis Motor Speedway
Indianapolis Motor Speedway, also known as The Brickyard, is the home of the Indianapolis 500 motor race.
In the world of Spearfish Lake Tales Mel Austin was a member of pit crew a number of times. Squirt Chenowith, Runt Chenowith and Spud McElroy all raced in the Indy 500. See On the Road.
Ray Austin was chief (only) mechanic two years running babying an obsolete Eagle chassis turbo-Offenhauser powered car. The first year for Paul Pieplow who finished the race 44 laps down. The second year with the same car for Ted Hilyard who spun out of the final corner on his qualifying run, failing to make the race. After a creash Ted Hilyard drove T.J. Wireman's third car faster than the registered driver had been able to and earned himself a drive in the NASAR CART series. See Banners Flying.
