Paul Pieplow was a racer in South Bend who wanted one shot at driving in the Indy 500 and needed a chief mechanic. Mel Austin passed the word to his son Ray who took it on.
Paul qualified thirty-second fastest out of a field of thirty-three. Thoough he was seventeen laps down he was still running at the end of the race so finished in twenty-fourth place.BR3-5
Paul sold the car and all the parts he had to Ted Hilyard of Puyallup, Washington and passed along Ray's name as a mechanic.BR3-12
