Summary

Randy flies from MSP to SFO for a construction equipment show, and incidentally to have a minimal notice face-to-face visit with his big sister. He spends most of the flight thinking about the Newton’s windmill house and the construction logistics issues. He sketches a design of a pontoon raft with six rows of ten 55-gallon drums - his goal is to safely float a minimum of 4 tons of payload plus a huge safety factor.

Randy drives the rental car to Rachel's house and they chat. Over an hour-long conversation Randy realizes that there is major emotional spousal abuse plus some physical - it is worse than anybody thought.

The chapter closes with Randy saying Rachel, I just want you to know one thing. Don’t let things get too bad. You do have options, no matter what he says, and remember that Dad and I are just a phone call away. You can depend on us if you need to. If it turns out that you need us to protect you from Joel, we can deal with that if we have to.
