Summary

Adam left Winchester Harbor on Moonshadow, followed down the channel by Jake and Amanda on Chinook. When he turned east-southeast Chinook headed away to find fish. with a strong following wind he made good progress, stopping each night, arriving in Frenchtown Harbor in the afternoon of the fourth day.

The next morning he was served breakfast at a drive-through by Diane Balch, the woman who had caused him so much trouble when she’d been at Children’s Protective Services. When he got to the office he called Deke Hampton who was surprised that the discipline imposed by Children’s Protective Services was more than a slap on the wrist.

Things at Caldwell-Deerfield were running smoothly. Bob asked whether Adam was considering selling the company, and when Adam confirmed it was a possibility said that a number of people were interested in making an employee buyout. Adam agreed it was worth considering and exploring from both sides. It might help with his taxes if it was gradual. Adam asked Bob to put a formal proposal together.

Needing to move furniture and some other things from his apartment to his storage shed he called Beverly to get details of someone who could pack and move them for him. They arranged to have lunch together where he talked about his trip on Moonshadow'. Beverly said she'd like to make a trip like that sometime but when Adam offered to take her she wasn't ready to leave her business for any length of time.

Adam called Lisa trying to get information about Brittany. She didn't have much to tell him but she had the general impression that things were improving for her.

He called Audrey to tell her that he'd be starting out on Moonshadow on Saturday morning. She said she'd like to go with him but was trying to placate her family. He said that her daughter-in-law sounded a bit like Brittany and that he'd had to walk away to be free of her. He wasn't surprised to be turned down again but thought Audrey was the person he'd most like to have along with him.

He called Carolyn in the evening to see if she had anything on Brittany and she confirmed what Lisa had said without giving him a real idea how Brittany was. He also invited Carolyn to join him on Moonshadow for part of her summer break but she again said she wanted to keep her life as it was.

Next day he called Dr Preble, who hinted that a meeting between Brittany, Mary and Matty might work. That was the most positive he'd ever been so Adam decided to visit Brittany to talk to her and gauge her attitude himself. When he arrived at her house in Wychbold he was surprised to see her working in her garden. By the end of their conversation Adam promised to ask Mary whether she would be prepared to meet Brittany, and let her know as soon as possible.
