Summary
After Amber had left for school on Monday morning Nanci took a phone call from Reverend John Saunders of Lexington Community Church during which he harangued her about taking Elmer Pepper's funeral. She hung up on him and left for the Prairie Dawn while the phone was ringing again.
At the Prairie Dawn she spoke with Larry and Bernice Reed and learned more of John Saunders. After a while Larry changed the subject to yesterday's sermon and said "I think it’s good for a preacher to have been out in the world enough to learn what sin really is.”
On her way back to the parsonage she stopped to see the Sheriff. He had been trying to call her to tell her that the Denver police had found a body matching Linda Wallace's description. He asks if Nanci thinks Amber could identify the body. Before going to the school to tell Amber together the Sheriff asks Nanci if she'll become Amber's legal guardian. She agrees to that, and to drive Amber to Denver to identify the body.
After Amber had confirmed the identification Nanci asked the attendant about the cause of death. He thought it was probably alcohol poisoning.
“She drank too much, and it poisoned her for years,” Amber said sharply. “I don’t want to look at her again, but I want to remember her in that drawer just to remind me that I don’t want to wind up in a drawer like that because alcohol killed me too. She may have been my mother, but I don’t want to end up like her.”
