Elmer Pepper was an old man, very old who had advanced cancer which made him seem even older. The pain medication didn't help any more and the inevitable couldn't be very far off.
Elmer got together with Gladys at a barn dance in about 1940 and she'd waited for him while he was away in the Pacific during World War II. They had two sons. They had been married for 50 years before she had died,CR1 nearly twenty years previously.CR7
He had been a good neighbor and well liked – but he had grown to be a loner and set in his ways after Gladys had died.CR14
Elmer had encouraged Trent Westbrook when he started to run bufafalo and used his previous experience with them to advise Trent.CR17
On Sunday May 6, 2007 Elmer drove to his wife Gladys's grave and decided to take the one sure way of ending the cancer and the pain - with his twelve-gauge shotgun.CR1
The shot was heard by Trent Westbrook who assumed it was a neighbor shooting a coyote.
Their two sons, one of whom was Wayne,CR6 had already died leaving just a grandson, Gerald Pepper, as sole heir.CR7
Elmer was found by Shirley Gamble and Cathy Westbrook on Monday afternoon.CR5 His funeral at the graveside in West Walke Cemetery was led by Reverend Nanci Chladek and a salute was provided by the American Legion Post from Carondelet.CR17
