Summary
Gerald Pepper is told of his grandfather's death by a Kansas City policeman and asked to phone the Walke County sheriff. He learns he is the sole heir and is responsible for the disposition of the body, amongst other things.
Inheriting the ranch seems like it might provide a new start away from the difficulties of his life in Kansas City.
He gives notice at his job at the start of his Wednesday evening shift, and informs Josie when he picks Leah up after midnight that they'll be leaving Kansas City on Friday and are unlikely to be back.
He keeps Leah home from school on Thursday so they can pack up ready to leave on Friday morning. When he left the appartment keys he knew he was behind on the rent and promised himself he'd send it when he could.
