Summary
Debby introduces Jake to the pleasures of sex, then they spend the night together in his motel room, but when he awakes she is gone - she has to open the snack bar for the breakfast customers.
He shares a surprisingly frank breakfast with Debby and Barbara at the snack bar and then meets Nate for the first time at the fuel dock.
He works on cleaning a motel room until mid morning, when Barbara suggests a trip for supplies that afternoon.
After lunch he drives Debby through Winchester, south past the golf course and on to Hughesville, eight or nine miles inland. They return with the supplies, including several pairs of deck shoes for Jake.
Real World Note
"Deck shoes", also called "boat shoes" or "topsiders" are real - they are leather or canvas-based upper section that will air-dry quickly and with non-marking rubber soles designed for use on a boat. A siping pattern is cut into the soles to provide grip on a wet or slippery surfaces, like the deck of a steel or fiberglass boat.
