Summary
After the Channel Stop closed the next day Jake was sitting on his balcony reflecting on the previous day and evening. He knew that Brittany was now history. With Debby wrapped up with John, Susie in Chicago, and Annette totally pre-occupied it seemed like all permanent relationship options were pretty well gone.
Debbie and John joined Jake on his balcony for a while and discussed the situation, including Jake saying I think I can say I’m over her (but) I can see I’m not over the implications. John said Karen ... wanted what she wanted, and damn the facts or anyone else. (She) was the type of girl you dream about, but the reality was a nightmare. John also compared Karen to Debby, and Jake made some comments as well.
Annette showed up around bedtime, crawled into my bed and we cuddled. Jake wound up telling her most of what had happened the night before, along with suspicions and discoveries about Brittany, and how cold and unresponsive she had been. The walls between Debby’s room and Jakes were thin, and at one point they heard Debby say Yes, John! Yes, I’ll marry you!
Over the next few days they decided set the wedding date in the fall, and at the golf course clubhouse.
Memorial Day weekend was it's normal madhouse, pumping fuel almost non-stop. Jake continued to be the occasional crewman for Nate. Like last year Rachel was able to skip finals week due to her outstanding grades. She crewed for her father the entire finals week, and she continued for a couple of weeks after that. One day they had a cancellation and she was able to twist Jakes arm to get the two of then out in the Pixie. They ended up on the beach at Gull Island, spread out on a couple of beach towels.
Rachel brought up Brittany, and Jake confirmed it was over. The discussion diverted to Annette, and Jake confirmed that they were cuddle and sleep friends, and that's all it will ever be. Jake asked about her, and any boyfriends, and she commented that Most of the boys at school are dorks. The ones who show signs of not being dorks are all ones who can’t wait till they graduate and get out of here.
The chapter closed with Rachel saying It’s over with, Jake ...There’s someone out there waiting for you, and I know it. You’ve just got to wait until the time is right. It’s just not yet, but your time will come.
