The fertilizer plant had caught fire because the chemicals that had dropped on the ground had provided a path to the inside. Linder knows they have to let the plant burn. In time Linder also realizes that the paper plant is lost too, and that he has to rearrange the fire crews in order to protect as many houses as possible.
The engine crew get to Warsaw, and the mechanic checks over the engine left in Warsaw, but cannot see that he can do anything to repair it. They plow out the rails some distance to the east, just in case the scram train needs to go that way, and also to make it easier for the D&O crew of Steve Cziller if he gets there. On the way back to Spearfish Lake the train first loses air pressure, then stops dead.
