Summary
Worried that Moonshadow might be a bit much for Adam, Jake asked Amanda what she thought of his sailing ability. She reported positively, saying “He’s mature, he thinks, and he keeps his cool. That’s worth a lot.”
Talk turned to Amanda's plans to head to Florida to look for a boat during the winter. Knowing she wanted to be frugal with accommodation Jake had to tell her that Winter Haven wouldn't be available as it was scheduled pretty tight.
Jake started giving Amanda the captain's responsibility on Chinook even though she didn't yet have the license.
Adam returned to Winchester Harbor and took a motel room. He worked on his new boat, or went out sailing.
One evening when the Lewises and Adam were having dinner in the snack bar when Ron Lewis phoned for her. He'd bought a boat, a Triton 28, for her for just about scrap value. She was excited and wanted to get to Florida as soon as possible. Jake asked Adam whether he'd be deck hand on the Chinook for the rest of the month, until the end of the fishing season. When Adam agreed, Jake said she could go. She told Ron she'd be on the road first thing next morning.
Amanda included tools and supplies she thought she'd need to work on the boat when she packed her car.
