Summary

When Adam returned the weather was still a little rough but he was anxious to collect Moonshadow. Sam Dale, a retired guy who was one of the breakfast regulars at the Channel Stop was willing to go with Adam and Amanda and bring Adam's car back.

Adam and Amanda started with the outboard hardly making any headway against a strong head wind. When they got the sails hoisted they were making lots of tacks to make slow progress over the land. Amanda suggested putting in to Sutton's Bay to wait the weather out but Adam pointed out they hadn't brought any food with them so they needed somewhere to get a meal when they stopped. "...as the day was dying they finally decided to pull into the harbor of St. James on Beaver Island." They went to a small bar for a meal and Adam didn't make any objection to Amanda ordering a beer even though he knew she wasn't yet twenty-one.

Adam said he realized that the Knick-Knack couldn't have coped with the conditions, and that Moonshadow could handle anything he could handle.

Amanda had vague thoughts of buying or renting Knick-Knack from Adam and taking it to Florida for the winter. Two things stopped her mentioning it: it would take a lot of money from her boat fund without really helping her dream, and eventually Adam would have the idea of taking it south himself.

The second day the wind had backed and their course was more north-east at first before turning south-east don Lake Huron so they made better progress and were more comfortable. Even though they'd bought bread and peanut butter lunch wasn't easy as there was no silverware on board. Adam realised he had rushed the pickup of the boat and hadn't planned it as he should have.
