Summary
Kent Bacon encouraged Rachel and Kayla to run less and add swimming and bike riding to their training. He suggested they could try a mini-triathlon coming up soon.
Kayla slowly read Walden and sometimes discussed ideas in it with Dave Patterson. When she'd finished it she thanked Mrs Hephner for it and asked about other books she could read. While reading and thinking about Leaves of Green she realised why Mrs Hephner had said that Walden was a dangerous book. The books she had been reading had widened her horizons so their "house, which now seemed to sit in a much smaller town in a much larger, more complex and more interesting world than it had been a few hours before."
One afternoon while Kayla and Rachel were nude, sunning themselves in the Holst backyard, Shae Kirkendahl came round and joined them. Shae got into the pool and appreciated the relief the bouyancy gave her. She talked to them about pregnancy, letting them see and feel when the baby moved.
