Kayla Holst is the daughter of Emily Jones and Kevin Holst. She was born in spring of 1989.HS10 Her brother JJ Holst was a year younger.
Kayla attended Bradford Elementary School and at one point, she had Roberta Wisner as a teacher.
When Dave Patterson moved back to Bradford after September 11, 2001, Kayla often babysat his sons Cameron and Tyler. At the time, she was 12 years old, "and while there was a family resemblance, she was already almost as tall as her mother, gangly looking the way some girls get before they shoot up and blossom".PUTP18
In October 2001, she "was in her first year on the middle school cross-country team, and Emily said she was showing signs of being a good runner".PUTP19 She liked to run barefoot, much to the consternation of her track coach Bill Beverson. Partly encouraged by exposure to Dave and Shae Kirkendahl, by June 2002 Kayla became interested in discussing books like Thoreau's Walden, human rights, going to college and possibly becoming a lawyer.PUTP41
