Summary
Driving Amber home from the Westbrook Ranch Nanci learned quite a bit about the girl and respected her determination.
Gerald and Leah Pepper drove out to Elmer's ranch and found the house as much a mess as the sheriff had said, with many things just where they'd been put down and never tidied away. Gerald decided they had to stay there at least for now and told Leah “We’ve got a lot of work to do to make it a nice place to live, but most of it will be work we can do.”
Nanci offered Amber as much of the food from the potluck as she wanted, and said she'd keep it in her refrigerator as Amber couldn't keep things long. She also invited Amber to call at the parsonage anytime she wanted.
When Nanci had been home about 20 minutes Amber knocked on the door. Her mum hadn't been back and Amber had appreciated the chance to talk. After more conversation Amber asked if she could go to church with Nanci tomorrow and was invited to stay the night.
