Summary

It took three days to drive the dump truck from Pass Christian to Spearfish Lake. They had a lot of time - three days and nights - to talk. It seemed as if a special time was ending when on Thursday afternoon Jim pulled into Clark Construction and parked right in front of the office.

Regina greeted them, informed Rachel that she had a desk full of paperwork, that Randy was at Three Pines and that Jim was to just park the truck and trailer in the equipment barn. Also, his pickup was in the barn and the keys are in it.

Jim drove over to the barn and together they moved their gear out of the dump truck and into Jim’s truck, then drove over to Rachel’s house, where he helped her carry her gear inside. After a very intense kiss that went on and on and some longing looks he drove over to his place while she went to pick up Jared.

Jim hauled his gear in from the truck and decided to do some grocery shopping. He drove over to the Pike Bar to see if anyone from the Pass Christian job was there. Several were at a back table with coffee cups and a gin rummy card game going. He ended up eating dinner there and then picked up some groceries, drove home and went to bed.

The next morning Jim drove out to the Café for breakfast and then to work. Rachel was busy with the pile of paperwork and then Randy called him into his office.

Jim closed the office door, sat down, and started out by thanking him for the use of the equipment and for putting together the Pass Christian house project. Randy replied that it was No big deal and that they might even do it again next year. Jim volunteered that Aaron and his Amish crew are planning to being there and that they would appreciate the help.

Over the next half hour Randy summarizes several topics including that they have three big jobs this summer, not two, and Jim is promoted to steel crew superintendent! Randy has to talk him into taking the job. Jim gives in, but asks for some help, especially on the paperwork.

The chapter ends with Jim promising to give his new job his best efforts, and Randy saying I don’t doubt that it’ll be more than good enough. I think you’re going to have an interesting future in this company.
