Summary

Dr. Thompson talked to Susan about setting up a college security force starting with a police sergeant who’s getting set to retire, and ... has the mindset of a good security man (by implication, John CLaxton).

He then asked Susan to continue as Dean of Students, a permanent position, and to find replacements for the Student Relations and University Ombudsman positions. The former to be in the Dean of Students office as her assistant. She suggested Laura Delacroix for the latter. Susan still wanted to travel and the development of the international students and international studies programs were left with her expecting some overseas visits to establish links.

Once Susan had agreed to that, Dr. Thompson warned her that he wanted someone in place who would keep SMU's unique ethos when he retired. He could see that being Susan in ten or so years.

Laura DelaCroix gave Stacy a lift home for Christmas break. Stacy was quick to tell her mother she thought she'd got a job lined up for the summer so wouldn't be home.

One day in spring Cody got home from a class at Notre Dame to find Jan asleep on the sofa. He eventually realised it was the first time he'd known her to sleep if he wasn't in the apartment. She told him “I thought I’d take the risk, since I haven’t had Dad and Bobby come after me in my dreams since the shooting last fall.”

Afterword

Author’s note: At some point I realized I was going to have Cody, Jan, Jack, Vixen, Alan, and Summer at Southern Michigan University all at the same time. Also, a projected series that never came to fruition would have also featured Susan there as an undergraduate, as well. Since the university was obviously going to be the location of a future story, I decided I’d better pull together my thoughts, and wrote a long memo to myself about it. Then, one evening I whimsically pulled those notes together in a format that could have been a background press release that would have been distributed by the university public relations department. The release included a few things about the university I was not able to work into this story, so just for a special bonus to readers, I’m including it here.

Southern Michigan University is a special place that unfortunately only exists in my head, though I’ve often wished it was real.
