Mel's family expected him to be an unpaid farm hand supporting his parents and later his brother, Philip, who would inherit the farm. After a short night Mel left the farm.
At the Hartford Café he met the high school principal, Mr Vogt, who suggested he try college on the GI Bill and set up a provisional acceptance to Nebraska State Teacher’s College in Chadron.
Mel's acceptance at the college was confirmed but he couldn't find anywhere to live so he put on his uniform and knocked on doors in the area round the college asking for a room.
Whne he inroduced himself to Mrs Gingandet she got emotional saying that her husband, Mel, had been killed on Okinawa. After she calmed down they agreed he'd rent a room from her.
The first night Bessie came to his room and bed.
