Mrs. Austin (no first name mentioned) was the mother of Mel Austin, the narrator of On the Road.
She also had an older son, Philip and a daughter Shirley.
Sometime after 1946, Mr. Austin got very sick. The older Austins retired from farming and moved to San Diego, California, close to Shirley. Mr. Austin died a few years later, but Mrs. Austin lived until her nineties.BR1-4
